"Say that to my victims." he hated to ruin the mood, but...

"I should be hard on myself. Ancient history is a good predictor of the present and the future."

"Father is." Elladan points out stubbornly.

"And he loves you. He forgave you long ago. And ancient history tells me that you can be as kind as you can be cruel."

Maedhros looked away stubbornly, scowling.

"He should not. Any kindness I showed him was selfish. It was because I missed my brothers."

[huntingorcs]

"Maybe." Elladan shrugs expansively.

"But he does, and he taught us to do the same. Besides, just because you do something for selfish reasons doesn't make it wrong You were still kind to them. Father remembers."

[castintoflames]

"...how could anyone be cruel?" he whispered more to himself than Elladan, "If you had seen them, you would know. They..." his eyes focused on the young Elf again, "...were like you. But small."

He had no defense for that sort of thing. Even in his madness, love came quickly and easily for children.

"Erestor says when we were young and mischievous that it was very easy." Elladan says impertinently and then smiles at Maedhros.

"See, I told you you were kind.

"Indeed." his smile was a little too sad for the mood, "I wish I could have..."

No, that wasn't his right. He flushed and sighed.

"No, I just have certain weaknesses. I do have six younger brothers."

[huntingorcs]

"And?" Elladan shrugs at him, and then decides to take his hand.

"You are a protector. That's what father said. He loved you then, he loves you still. That is his choice, he said, because love is always a choice."

Maedhros glanced down at their hands as if he didn't understand how such a feat could be possible. He had done amazing things in his lifetime, but this...

To have a family again... Even if...

"What do you choose? Away from his opinion?"

[huntingorcs]

Elladan looks thoughtful.

"I think that you are sad, and lonely, and kind. I think that I am very interested in meeting a character from the stories and histories, and learning about Maedhros the person, and not just the words on a page."

He raises an eyebrow at him and doesn't release his hand.

"I think you could be very dangerous. But I don't think you are dangerous to me."

His luck was either horrific or amazing. Elladan's foresight was remarkable and Maedhros bowed his head until their foreheads were touching. He was silent for a long moment, eyes closed.

"Never on purpose. But there is much that happened that I never intended."

[huntingorcs]

Elladan smiles up at him and leans back.

"Well, if it isn't on purpose than it isn't entirely your fault, yes? I can live with that."

"I cannot be a coward; I cannot back away from what happened, whether I wished it or not." Maedhros relished the warmth and the contact. He had a difficult time on his own. He wasn't as strong as Maglor in that respect.

[huntingorcs]

Elladan will totally give him as much contact as he wants!

"I cannot think of you as a coward - facing the past is both wise and right."

"I should thank you, but I fear you share your father's delusions." Maedhros spoke fondly even if the words might seem biting. His fire was often that way - seeking to burn and yet, underneath, only wishing to warm and welcome.

Elladan spreads a hand across his chest and blinks at him in wide-eyed innocence that fools absolutely no one.

"Who, me?"

Then he grins.

"Well, probably - but I don't think that is a bad thing."

"Yes. You." Maedhros crossed his arms over his chest, unrelenting, "Thus why you are deluded, youngling."

Adorably deluded. He sighed and tilted his head:

"Give me your word you will take all precautions during our stay. Do not let down your guard - even for Kano and I."

[huntingorcs]

"I like to think of it as a unique view of the world." Elladan retorts cheerfully, but he sobers and smiles up at Maedhros as he promises.

"I will be careful, I promise."

"Uniquely deluded." so very few were deluded enough to love them. Maedhros felt his heart melting and he was hopeless to stop it.

"I mean it, Elladan. Do not lie to me charmingly about this."

[huntingorcs]

Innocent blinking.

"Why grandfather, are you doubting my ability to be careful?"

Softer. "I really will, grandfather, truly."

"I doubt your ability to avoid the curse that hangs over my family like an ominous cloud." he sighed and bowed his head, "Do your best. The rest, leave to me."

[huntingorcs]

Elladan frowns up at him and reaches to grip an arm.

"Do not do anything foolish after warning me to do the same! Father would have wanted you to be safe. I want the same. I do not fear you, grandfather. I will be careful, but I do not wish you to hide from me."

He jumped a little, blinking owlishly. The idea of him doing something foolish meant nothing to him. He was already scarred - both inside and out. What did it matter if he was hurt or even killed?

"Safety is not mine to have." Maedhros pressed a kiss to Elladan's brow, "I will give as much of it as I can to you without regret."

[huntingorcs]

"But it is what I wish for you." Elladan retorts, leaning into the offered affection.

"Please, grandfather."

He laughed hoarsely, the sound more than slightly unhinged.

"Why not wish for one of the stars? You have more of a chance of acquiring that!"

He flushed at the plea, sighing.

"I shall...try?"
